So, you’re in Osaka, Japan’s party central and takoyaki paradise. You’ve seen the neon lights of Dotonbori, took the picture with the グリコ(Glico), dodged bicycles in Umeda, and maybe even attend the Osaka Expo 2025. But what if I told you that heading to northern Japan is absolutely worth it? (Not to mention, it's surprisingly easy and affordable to get back to Tokyo from here too)
The mountains are majestic, the air is clean, the festivals are stunning, and the snow of the mountains are like cotton candy on the peaks. Oh, and definitely less crowded than anywhere else where the tourists numbers drops sometimes to single digits?
Sounds peaceful, right? No wonder why Iwate is the hometown of super legends like Shohei Ohtani... and even Nobara Kugisaki from Jujutsu Kaisen. But getting here? Well, that's when the adventure begins.
Here’s my practical, slightly chaotic, and hopefully helpful guide on how to get from Osaka to Ichinohe in Iwate without losing your sanity (or all your yen).
The first high-speed train in the world, if you didn’t already know, now you do. It’s fast, sleek, and expensive.
If you use any map app (Google Maps, Apple Maps, etc.), it’ll insist on the Shinkansen route. But unless you have a JR Pass (around ¥50,000 for a week), the ride from Osaka to Ninohe alone can cost over ¥25,000 one way. Add transfers and the IGR fare to Ichinohe, and you're looking at +¥26,000 with a 7–8 hours range of travel time.
And honestly? For that much time and money, it's not even the most efficient.
I did some detective work (thank me later) and found three better options using domestic flights + trains/local transportation.
📸 Bonus: Epic views of Mt. Iwate on the IGR train = Instagram gold.
✍️ Pro Tip: English is widely spoken in Misawa so you'll probably be approached in English if you need some help. Bonus points: Aomori is widely known for their apples so better catch one or two on the way to Iwate! They even have apples of the size of cherries! 🍒
🎯 Best for flexibility and budget.
Once I made the Osaka–Ichinohe trip with only 4 days in advance (I had to...), and it took 5 hours and 40 minutes, costing ¥17,440. Not bad. So...
🗓️ Book early, or prepare to donate your wallet to JR.
🧳 Traveling with a 15kg carry-on and a 7kg backpack? No problem. Just try not to look like you're moving to Ichinohe permanently.
The IGR line between Morioka and Ichinohe is not just transport—it’s a journey. The views of Mt. Iwate (Iwate San) out the window are spectacular, especially if you catch the golden hour. You'll wish the ride was longer!
You're probably thinking: "But why Ichinohe?" Good question.
It’s quiet, serene, and full of charm. And seriously, compared to Osaka’s flashing chaos, Ichinohe is like stepping into a Ghibli scene; peaceful countryside, traditional building houses, open skies and a city perfectly in balanced with the mountain. You must have seen places like this likein animes like Evangelion or video games like Crayon Shin-chan’s summer vacation or Yo-kai Watch. (Mejorar las referencias)
You can visit local shrines hided among trees, explore the Goshono Unesco park, enjoy the playful and creative Iwate Kodomo no Mori, or even stroll the area that carries the legacy of the Nanbu Clan, who once ruled this region and left behind rich cultural traces still felt today.
Is getting to Ichinohe from Osaka hard? Not really. Confusing? A little.
Worth it? Absolutely. If you're looking to go beyond buildings and vending machines, hop on a plane, catch a countryside train, and discover the other faces of Japan where tranquility isn’t just a buzzword, it’s literary the air you breathe.
